McQueen s videos are often seen projected large, within a darkened room, with highly polished floors and are silent compositions, or when accompanied by sound, it is usually a score. The films flicker as they project.

Current is a five-frame recording of a bike at the bottom of the Limat River in Zurich. Though the projection shows no moving images, it evokes flowing continuity due to the fade-overs of five 35mm slides. We see a flat body of water and discover that a bicycle has come to a standstill at the bottom of the river. The slowly overlapping images make the bicycle seem to shift position slightly since each image becomes a reverberating echo on the next until it finally fades out. The light intensity varies from slide to slide, creating a play of light and shade, current and stagnation, reality and illusion. McQueen describes Current as using a scene and subject which is unrecognisable, but recognisable enough that you can understand it. It is not abstract, but a piece that provides a different experience and a different language, but can still be understood.
