Autoconstrucci¢n is translated in to self-building which has inspired Cruzvillegas to record the observations and the changes made to his family s home over a 20 year period. Living towards the south of Mexico City, from the 1960 s, when there was economic and social instability, the materials and techniques for building were limited. Constant modifications and improvements were made, as there were no clear architectural plans the house often appeared chaotic and unusable, yet every part of the house was functional and useable. It was constructed through an organic process of change and adaption, created from necessities of living within the space.
The Autoconstrucci¢n series started by looking at the house as a whole and then looking at specific details and contents individually and aspects were used and them re-used and adapted over time, becoming a continuous record of Cruzvillegas construction of his own identity.
Cruzvillegas uses materials within the environment he is residency or working in at the time, that are not necessarily of any particular attraction or purpose to him at the time, but the fact that the materials could have a future use is significant to his working process. It can take a matter of months to collect materials, without them being used, yet it is a matter of experimentation in the studio, when multiple items become transformed and juxtaposed together in to sculptural pieces.
