Nutjuitok (Polar Star), 2012 from the recital of the same name, examines the art of Matthew Henson (1866–1955), an American explorer and navigator who made eight Arctic voyages with Commander Robert Peary, during which he traded with the Inuit, mastered their language, built sleds and igloos, trained dog teams and became an expert driver. In 1909 Henson became the first person to set foot at the North Pole. This recital recasts Henson’s artisanal skills as those of an artist proper and reconsiders his polar enterprise as a magnum opus of immersive research. It treats the Arctic region’s peculiar relationship of inner to outer space – the illusory limitlessness of the vast Arctic landscape versus the inward sensory withdrawal from the extremity of its harsh climate. The holographic inner light of the sculpture Nutjuitok suggests the Arctic celestial phenomena.
