Duststorm was produced based on a 1930 s photograph of a storm creating a large dust cloud. Gerrard believes that the amount of petroleum based power in the early 20th Century, was a big contributor to the Great Depression, the economic slump of this period.
A virtual reconstruction of the original photograph consists of hundreds of photographs and video taken by Gerrard, of a ten square mile section of Texan landscape, close to Dalhart. The imagery was supported and enhanced by publically accessible topographical and satellite information on the landscape. When activated a virtual storm develops in a random manner, on the landscape.
